User @julianobayd filmed the fascinating-looking creature and uploaded the video to TikTok, captioning it, “Anyone know what this is?”

The video has since gone viral – with more than a million views – because, as it turns out, this pretty little creature could actually have caused serious illness if it had decided to sting him.

Known as the sea swallow, blue angel, blue dragon or blue sea slug, the glaucus atlanticus absorbs the poison of other sea creatures,
They feed on other pelagic creatures – ie, those that swim in the water columns of the open ocean – including venomous blue bottles or the Portuguese Man o’ War.
The poison ingested from other creatures is then stored within their own tissue to use as a defence against other predators.

While the TikTok user joked about the sea slug looking a bit like a Pokemon character, some of his 48,000 followers were quick to inform him that the creature could have packed a nasty sting.

nasty【CET4】adj.

“That’s a glaucus atlanticus and it’s a weird dragon thing that are commonly found on the beaches of Australia,” one person wrote.

“It is VERY poisonous.”

“Rule of thumb with sea life in the southern hemisphere … if it is vibrant blue it’s a no-no,” another said.

“I have been seeing them all over southeast Queensland.”

A sting from one of the creatures can be particularly nasty, with symptoms including pain at the sting site, nausea and vomiting, allergic dermatitis and blistering.

Sea slugs are not native to Australia; they have also been found on the surface of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans in temperate and tropical waters throughout the world.

“Bro your (sic) so lucky, I forgot what it is called but if you touch it you could die from the poison,” one person warned.

“A cutie pie that is poisonous AND stings,” another said.
